​HOW TO FLIP THE GYM AND MISTAKES TO AVOID-

What does it look like?

Flipping the gym assist students in being able to retain information before the unit or lesson begins. Initially students must have access to the google drive (canvas, blackboard) to be able to view documents and receive new information quickly form the teacher. An introductory class must be provided to ensure students have access to the google drive and an understanding of how the platform operates.  Expectations and guiding documents with link are then accessible for students on the google drive. Students use the resources provided to supplement learning before they enter the PE classroom.

Why is this so good?

Within PE class a teacher only has a small amount of time to demonstrate activities. Providing applicable resources within the guiding documents can help further the understanding within the lesson or unit. Students are also aware well in advance of assessments, expectations, and an outline of the unit. Furthermore loose documents are not lost or misplaced. Students will always have access to document online.

What are some common mistakes?

After my first unit of flipping the gym I reflected and found some areas of improvement.

-I am reducing the amount of paper work within the class but that does not imply to completely neglect providing hard copies of documents. Within the first couple lessons I would recommend handing out laminated copies of the assessment that will be returned at the end of class. Also I would have student pair and share information included in the final assessment. Providing hard copies of assessments and discussion of expectations resonate more with some students. -Keeping in touch online throughout the unit will provide certainty that students are comfortable with access. At the beginning I initiated contact with the student and at the end I expected them to understand how to upload their lessons. More contact between those times is imperative to ensure they are able to access and use the drive properly.
