Characteristics of a classroom layout that promotes positive management in a physical education setting:
Clean and organized locker room-
-Promotes student safety.
-Helps with efficient student changing into and out of gym clothes and shoes.
-Helps with teacher supervision.
Squad lines at the start of class-
-Routine, spacing for student movement.
-Alphabetical order for efficient taking of attendance. Students begin warm up routine while teacher takes attendance for time efficiency.
-Roll taking is not the responsibility of the students, so do not take up class time with the process (Wong, 2009, p. 133).
-After warm-ups, students gather around the gym white board (sitting) for review of Learning Targets.
-Class activities including demonstration/instruction of skills or activity (keep the students close so teacher doesn’t have to demonstrate or shout while students are spread out all over the gym or field).
Discussion, video or brief reading/writing assignment.
Gym and field equipment-
-Any gym or field equipment is already set up ready to go to maximize student activity time.
-All other gym and field equipment put away for safety and to keep distractions to a minimum.
